Auden Crochet Bag – FREE PATTERN

This minimalist and spacious bucket bag is the perfect addition to your Summer wardrobe. Whether you’re carrying beach day essentials, market treasures, or your next crochet work-in-progress, this chic and simple bowl tote has the perfect roomy interior. Lightweight and easy to work up this classic and casual piece is a must make! Scroll down for the free pattern or purchase an inexpensive downloadable PDF from Etsy HERE or Ravelry HERE!

For this project I loved using Lion Brand® Rewind™ Tape Yarn in the colour ‘Elm’.  It’s very light weight and the colours are sand-washed giving your piece a very beachy Summer vibe.  It’s labelled as a bulky yarn but it leans toward a medium weight in my opinion so if you’re choosing a substitute yarn just keep that in mind (a medium weight cotton might be a perfect fit if you work with the gauge and hook size).

I was happy to collaborate with Lion Brand® Yarn on this piece so if you’d like to purchase the pattern with the yarn as a kit (you can even add in a hook and darning needle) you can click HERE to visit the Lion Brand® website.

This bag is so simple (it uses only 1 stitch worked in the round) and I just love the minimalist boho finished product.  You can easily pack this little tote up and pull it out for trips to the market or store.  It would also make a great WIP (work-in-progress) bag for you next crochet or knit project.  Of course a day at the beach or pool wouldn’t be complete without a purse to carry your sunny day essentials (you could easily fit a towel, swimsuit, and book inside the roomy interior).

To make this bag as sturdy as possible I used a smaller hook size.  If you find the recommended hook too small to work with you can size up (it will just mean your finished bag will be larger in width and depth).  I also carried a second strand of yarn behind each round to further stiffen the bag and reduce stretch.  You could pull two strands from the same ball (one from the centre and one from the outside) or you could work with a strand from two different balls (I would recommend switching back and fourth every few rounds so you use up your balls at the same rate).  I hope that makes sense . . please watch the video tutorial below for a visual explanation.

I’m sure you’re ready to get started so let’s dive in . . .

ch – Chain: Yarn over, pull through loop on hook
sc – Single Crochet: Insert hook into stitch, yarn over and pull through stitch, yarn over and pull through all loops on hook
s2tog – Single Crochet 2 Stitches Together (invisible method): Insert hook into front loop of 1st stitch, insert hook into front loop of 2nd stitch, yarn over and pull through both front loops, yarn over and pull through both loops on hook

N O T E S

  • Beginning chain does not count as a stitch in stitch counts
    • Stitch count is in [ ] at the end of each round
  • Bag is worked in the round from the bottom up
  • Beginning in Round 3, rounds are continuous (no join) so using a stitch marker to mark the first stitch in each round is helpful
  • A second strand of yarn is held behind each round and crocheted over to strengthen bag and reduce stretching
  • Yarn amount listed above includes enough to hold secondary strand behind your work
  • TIP: pull yarn from centre of skein and outside so you have two strands (main yarn to crochet with and secondary strand to hold behind work) OR use two skeins (one for main strand and one for secondary strand) and switch between them every few rows so you use skeins up equally while you work
