Eva Crochet Summer Cardigan – FREE PATTERN

This lightweight cardigan is breathable and soft thanks to Lion BrandⓇ CobooⓇ Yarn, which is an equal blend of cotton and bamboo. With an airy design, ribbed trim, and drapey sleeves this breezy cover-up is perfect for Spring and Summer. Layer it with your favorite t-shirt dress, jean shorts, or swimsuit at the beach or pool. If you’re familiar with my patterns you know I love a filet crochet Summer cardi design!  Airy geometric cover ups that can carry you from Spring well into Fall.  Below are two more crochet patterns that may peak your interest if cotton cardigans are also your jam! 😉

I had the pleasure of using Lion BrandⓇ natural fibre CobooⓇ Yarn.  It’s 50% cotton, 50% bamboo, and 100% Summer approved.  It’s light weight and has excellent drape.  I did find that the yarn split from time to time while working some stitches but the finished product was well worth the minor slow downs in my opinion!

Lion BrandⓇ CobooⓇ Yarn comes in 18 different colours!!  I usually only have time to make one of each of my designs before I have to move on to the next project so I can’t wait to see what colour choice you make!  I’m dying to see this cardigan in Terracotta, Olive, and of course Silver . . but there are still so many other fun hues to choose from!  You can actually purchase the yarn you need to this sweater AND a downloadable/printable PDF pattern for it as a kit through the Lion Brand website . . click HERE to learn more!

I know I say this with each new pattern release but this crochet design really IS my new favourite.  I absolutely love the fit, length, and style.  The versatility has me so excited for Spring and Summer outfit planning.  I can’t wait for jean short season and I know it’s going to go great over my favourite T-shirt dresses too.  I’m thinking I can even use it as a swimsuit cover-up!  I clearly have warm weather on the brain but I’m looking forward to styling this cardigan in the colder months too (maybe with a long sleeve top or shirt underneath)!

I know you’re eager to get started but one last blurb to discuss the name of this design . . Eva was my grandmother’s name. She was an amazing woman and my appreciation for having been lucky enough to be her granddaughter is ever-growing.  It was she who gave me my first crochet hook and some yarn (I actually designed this piece using one of her old hooks).  So when it came time to name this pattern (one of my last steps when designing a piece) it felt like an Eva . . unique, powerful, and fun.  Something (just like someone) I’m proud to be connected to.

(Picture of finished M/L size sleeves)

SEAMING

Sleeves
Fold each sleeve in half and sl st (or sew) along edge to close

Shoulders
Lay front panels on top of back panel as shown and slip stitch through beginning rows of each panel to join front and back of cardigan together (XS/S and XL/XXL sizes will not have a gap between the front panels and will overlap by 1 stitch in the center of the cardigan)

Sides and Arm Holes
Beginning at bottom of cardigan slip stitch (or sew) sides together leaving openings at the top to attach sleeves

Optional: begin side seam slightly above the bottom ribbed trim to create a small slit (as seen in pictures of finished piece and below)

Making sure sleeves are still inside out and sleeve seam is facing down, positioned under the arm, begin slip stitching (or sewing) around cardigan arm hole openings and top of sleeves to join

COLLAR TRIM
Turn cardigan right side out

Row 1
Beginning at bottom front of opening attach yarn, chain 2, dc along opening to top of cardigan (approximately 2 dc for every row)

Rotate and continue to dc crochet along top of cardigan (for XS/S and XL/XXL sizes skip this step)

Rotate again and dc along opposite side to bottom of cardigan (approximately 2 dc for every row)
