Isla Crochet Granny Square Sweater – FREE PATTERN

Modern twist on a crochet classic! This beautiful granny square sweater is classy, boho chic, and (most excitingly) perfect for all 4 seasons! Crochet yours with cotton yarn and take advantage of the naturally spaced stitches for a lightweight Spring layer or breathable Summer cover up . . . or use acrylic or wool for a heavier more cozy Fall & Winter feel. Either way this pullover is sure to be your next favourite make.  Scroll down for the free pattern or purchase an inexpensive downloadable PDF from Etsy HERE or Ravelry HERE!

I know I say this every time I publish something but this project is a new favourite!  I love how the design kept my interest with the sometimes challenging stitches and constant switch ups (making different squares, crocheting rows along the sides, sewing pieces together, and working on the collar and trim).  I was never bored when working on the pattern for this pullover.  If you like mixing it up during a project this sweater is for you!

I enjoyed using Bernat® Softee® Cotton Yarn (in ‘Clear White’) for the Isla Granny Square Crochet Sweater.  It’s very soft and lightweight for a cotton yarn (it has some acrylic in it).  Softee Cotton comes in a variety of bright colours and neutrals. I would LOVE to see this sweater in the ‘Fucshia’ pink tone or the soft ‘Pool Green’ that seems to be that perfect shade of green that I’m seeing everywhere this Fall.  ‘Dusk Blue’ and ‘Golden’ would also be fun choices . . the light blue would be sweet for Summer and the gold colour would look amazing for a Fall piece. SO MANY OPTIONS!!

This sweater design really made me think of my amazing Grammy.  She was always crocheting, sewing, knitting, etc and you could find the most beautiful quilts, blankets, and hand made decorations in her home.  Granny squares aren’t something I’ve worked on often and making each little square brought me joy thinking of her and wondering what she would think about my plan to create something wearable with them. 🙂

This pattern is over 12 months in the making.  The sweater was designed, crocheted, and photographed last Summer.  I knew I’d missed my window to release the design before the snow fell so I put a pin in it until this Spring.  It’s taken months to figure out the sizing, measurements, yardage, etc.  SO much goes into a garment design and I really want the pattern to work for anyone who’s interested so trying to include a variety of sizes is important to me.  I hope you enjoy making up this sweet sweater and much as I have enjoyed bringing it to fruition.
