Delaney Velvet Crochet Cardigan – FREE Pattern

Delaney Velvet Crocheted Cardigan FREE Crochet Pattern

Crochet this luxe velvet cardigan using Bernat Velvet (or any bulky weight yarn you prefer)!  The Delaney Crochet Cardigan is airy and oh so soft. It drapes beautifully and is the perfect sweater for any season. This pattern is very beginner friendly (it’s so easy!) and the cardigan works up quickly, is simple to construct, and will look beautiful layered over jeans, leggings, or your favourite lounge wear! You can crochet 9 different sizes from adult XS to 5XL.  Scroll down for the free pattern or purchase an inexpensive downloadable PDF from Etsy HERE or Ravelry HERE!

I had intentions of posting this pattern in March but, like the majority of you, life took a turn and it has taken us some time to find balance.  A month in and we’re finally in a good groove and I’m excited to share this new design.  My daughters (ages 7 and 9) actually took all the pictures!  They had fun behind the camera and I’m majorly impressed with the shots they captured (plus I didn’t have to set the self timer and race to get into frame for each pose like I normally do so it took half the time)!  They’re hired!

Let’s talk about Bernat Velvet yarn for a second because IT. IS. AMAZING.  I could crochet with this yarn all day, every day.  It’s so soft and smooth and just a dream to play with.  Because it’s a ‘bulky’ weight yarn the cardigan works up really quickly too.  My only concern is that it can be a bit difficult to see your stitches because the yarn is so textured but if you’re using a simple pattern (like this one) with basic stitches I think you’d be fine.

Speaking of that thick velvet yarn texture, it made it difficult to add details to the cardigan (everything kind of messed into one squishy blob).  To add some interest to the cardigan (without extra bulk) I opted for sections with ‘holes’ mixed with solid rows.  I think this helps make the sweater look and feel lighter.

For me, this design was all about the shape.  I wanted a drape-y bubble sleeve open front cardigan that could fit easily into any wardrobe.  It took some work to get the cuffs and measurements just right but I’m so happy with the end result.  I think this garment could be worn in Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter.  The ‘holes’ make it airy but the bulky weight yarn also keeps it cozy.

I think this cardigan would look sweet in a different bulky weight yarn too (maybe something with a different or a little less texture).  You’d just have to do a swatch to text the gauge and possibly adjust the beginning chains accordingly.  I hope to make a white Delaney Cardi (. . and maybe also a grey) so I’ll keep you posted.

So, let’s get to why you’re really here . . the FREE PATTERN!   . . . scroll down my friend.  🙂

Attach Front Panels to Back Panel

Slip stitch uncuffed side of Front Panels to uncuffed side of Back Panel as shown above.  Make sure to line up the rows from the Back Panel and the Front Panels as you join. Each Front Panel has exactly half the number of rows as the Back Panel so opening of cardigan should be centered on Back Panel.

Fold cardigan in half as shown above and slip stitch sides together begging at the cuff.  On each side slip stitch:

  • 59 stitches – Adult X-Small
  • 58 stitches – Adult Small
  • 57 stitches – Adult Medium
  • 55 stitches – Adult Large
  • 53 stitches – Adult X-Large
  • 50 stitches – Adult 2 XL
  • 47 stitches – Adult 3 XL
  • 46 stitches – Adult 4 XL & Adult 5 XL

You will be left with an opening (the armhole) at the top of each side as shown below.

Seam Sleeves

Slip stitch last row of sleeve to first row of sleeve as shown below.

Repeat for second sleeve.

Attach Sleeves

Slip stitch uncuffed end of sleeve to arm hole opening as shown below.

Repeat for second sleeve

Weave in ends

Turn cardigan right side out (so slip stitched seams are on the inside)
