Evelyn Crochet Clutch – FREE Pattern

This beginner friendly crochet clutch pattern is the perfect accessory to add to your Summer wardrobe. This purse is modern and fun with cute tassel details. It’s the perfect size for date night or lunch with friends! Choose tassel colours to complement your favourite sundress one day and your new romper the next – so many possibilities!  Scroll down to get the pattern for free or download an inexpensive pdf version from Etsy HERE or Ravelry HERE.

I’ve been dreaming of this project since last Summer when I saw a similar woven bag online and wondered if I could recreate the look.  A few months and some trial and error later and ta-daaa! I’m really happy with how it turned out.  It’s lightweight and holds it’s shape well!  The pattern is beginner friendly using only single crochets, half double crochets, and slip stitches.

I love that the tassels are easy to change so you can mix things up and colour coordinate your clutch to different outfits!  It feels so fun and fresh!

I used Wool And The Gang’s Ra-Ra Raffia yarn for this project and am so glad I did!  The clutch has a great Summer texture and look.  I usually love working with cotton yarn for Summer bags because it’s easy to find locally and looks the part but in this case I think cotton would have been too heavy and caused the bag to be droopy or misshapen.  The raffia is as light as paper (well . . because it IS paper) and the finished piece is stiff enough to hold it’s shape.  Ra-Ra Raffia yarn is also biodegradable, vegan, water-resistant, and drys quickly!  What more can you ask for!

You may have noticed a cute pair of tassel earrings in these pictures as well . . . stay tuned for a quick and easy video tutorial on how to make these inexpensive and trendy Summer accessory yourself!  I found everything I needed at my local Michaels for under $10.

  1. Hi Kimberley…this is just the pattern I’ve been looking for! So cute! My question is about the raffia. I know you live in Canada (so do I). Is there someplace in Canada you are getting your raffia, or are you getting it from the US? I am also looking forward to the tassel earring pattern. I think the purse and earrings would be a great gift to give to someone. Also, do you think you’d need a snap to hold the purse closed?

    1. Hi! I’m so glad you reached out and sorry for the delayed reply. Yes, I ordered mine directly from Wool And The Gang (I believe there was duty but they do deliver to Canada). I’ve seen other makers order raffia from Amazon so you could try there as well. I haven’t seen any in local stores yet unfortunately. Wish I could be more help there. I didn’t find the bag needed a snap because the tassels weighed the top down and the raffia seemed to hold it’s shape once the clutch was made and sat for a few days even without the tassels. Put you definitely could add a snap too! The tassel earring pattern is in the works . . originally I used the same yarn for the earrings as I did for the purse tassels and while they looked okay I think I can do better with a different yarn/string. I hope to have that online this month! Hope that helps and if you have any other questions I’m always here. 🙂 Thanks again!!

  2. Thank you for this beautiful pattern! I can’t wait to gift this purse to a friend! One question though: My edge is slightly slanted—it’s straight but one end is much higher than the other. What am I doing wrong? I’m puzzled. Thanks in advance!!!

    1. Hi Nicole! So glad you like the pattern and I’m sure your friend will love the purse! Hmm . . perhaps an issue with the beginning chain and/or placement of your first stitch? Does your stitch count match up?

  3. I loved this clutch!!!
I cannot wait to find a raffia yarn to start to croche mine…

    1. Yay!! So glad you’re excited! Thanks for visiting the page Raquel! 🙂

  4. I’ve tried to make this three times and it’s not coming out right. Can you help me?

  5. Thanks so much. Just finished a rainbow one and am going to put a sparkly button to finish it off.
