Rylee Ribbed Crochet Hat – FREE PATTERN

Can you believe this cozy ribbed hat is crocheted!?  This classic knit-look toque was made using a very simple stitch and regular ole 5mm crochet hook.  The pattern is beginner friendly with pictures and even an HD video tutorial walking you through each step.  You can make 7 different sizes (newborn, baby, toddler, kids, and adults) so it’s perfect for your whole family or when making gifts for others!  I’ve tried many different techniques over the years to get that ribbed knit look with my crochet hook and this is by far my new favourite!! It’s simple, stretchy, and creates a thick + warm timeless look.  Scroll down for the free instructions or purchase an inexpensive downloadable PDF from Etsy HERE or Ravelry HERE!

I loved using Lion Brand’s Heartland yarn on this project!  It’s soft and the heathered colours give this simple ribbed design some extra depth.  Each skein is 251 yards which is enough to make any size hat – making this a very affordable project!  One and done!  To check out the other colour options (I used ‘Great Smoky Mountains’ – a perfect charcoal grey shade) click HERE to visit Lion Brand’s website.

This pattern involves one very basic stitch that I had never used before . . the hdc-ss or Half Double Crochet Slip Stitch. Yarn over, insert your hook into the stitch, yarn over and pull through the stitch and all the loops on your hook.  Easy right!?  It creates an extra thick slip stitch and when you crochet the next row you can create great stretch and ribbing but working into the back loop only.  So simple and what fantastic texture!

This hat looks so much like knit (but it’s crochet!) that I had to knit a hat for comparison.  In fact, I actually ended up creating a knitting pattern (the Ryker Ribbed Knit Hat pattern is shown below) for this hat as well.  I have crocheted for most of my life but knitting is relatively new to me so this pattern is VERY beginner friendly and would be great for a crocheter who’d like to give knitting a try.  Click HERE to see the free knitting pattern for this hat.

A little behind the scenes . . .
These pictures were actually taken in August . . on a very hot Canadian Summer day . . by my 9 and 7 year old girls.  It was a sweaty + giggly endeavour that I’m sure left my neighbours thinking I was absolutely crazy.  Life of a knitwear designer slash work from home Mom.  ; )

I hope you enjoy this pattern!  If you’re new to crochet I think it’s very doable (especially with the video tutorial included below).  Let’s get started . . .
