Lion Brand’s 24/7 Cotton yarn was perfect for this project. The dress is breathable, has great drape, and the stitches are well defined thanks to the smooth natural cotton. I’ve been wanting to make a swim cover up for many years now but was hesitant knowing that I’d inevitably have to post pictures of me IN said cover up. I loooove how this piece turned out (it’s the exact mix of classy/fun I was going for) and I have a healthy amount of self love BUT this is my first time posting something like this on a public platform and I was admittedly a little apprehensive. After sitting on the finished design for a few weeks I finally pressed publish and grateful for all the positive feedback and enthusiasm over the pattern! I’ll definitely be adding more cover-up / swim designs to my collection.
As I said, the aim was for this dress to be both classy and sexy. An elevated mesh cover up that hopefully appeals to 20 somethings, 40 somethings (like me), 60 somethings, and beyond. The high neckline wide tank straps, and long length make me feel covered up while the mesh crochet body allows for peeks of whatever cute swimwear you’re sporting underneath. The side slit(s) is optional and allows for another touch of fun if you’d like (you can make it as high or low as you’d like).

Using a 5 mm crochet hook, attach yarn to last stitch in bottom row of cover-up . . .
Row 1
Chain 7, loosely sl st in 2nd chain from hook, sl st in each chain until 1 chain remains, sl st into last chain and stitch in garment

Row 2
Chain 1, turn, loosely sl st in BLO of previous row
[ 6 sl st ]
Row 3
Chain 1, turn, loosely sl st in BLO of previous row until 1 stitch remains, sl st in BLO of last stitch and into next stitch in garment
[ 6 sl st ]
Remaining rows
Repeat Row 2 & Row 3 until you have reached the end of bottom row of cover-up
Fasten off
Repeat for both front and back panels of cover-up
Neck & Arm Trim
Using a 5 mm hook, attach yarn to bottom of arm hole or center back of neck. . .
Row 1
Chain 5, loosely sl st in 2nd chain from hook until 1 chain remains, sl st into last chain and stitch/row in garment
[ 4 sl st ]
Row 2
Chain 1, turn, loosely sl st in BLO of previous row
[ 4 sl st ]
Row 3
Chain 1, turn, loosely sl st in BLO of previous row until 1 stitch remains, Sl st in BLO of last stitch and into next stitch/row in garment
[ 4 sl st ]
Remaining rows
Repeat Row 2 & Row 3 until you have reached Row 1 around neck or arm hole, slip stitch first and last rows together to join ribbed trim
Fasten off
Repeat for both arm holes and neck of cover-up
BLOCKING
(Optional)
For optimal results secure cover-up on a flat surface and steam or lightly spray with water, press, and allow to air dry
